The Mactan was a cargo and passenger ship that sank on July 16, 1973 off the island of Maestro de Campo .
details
The motor ship was built in 1961 by the Nippon Kokan shipyard in Shimizu and initially sailed for the General Shipping Company from Manila under the name General del Pilar . In 1967, the ship was sold to the Manila-based shipping company Compania Maritima and renamed Mactan .
Sinking of the ship
On July 16, 1973, the ship was on a voyage from Nasipit on Mindanao Island and a stopover in Cebu City on the way to Manila . The ship had 680 passengers and the crew on board and carried a cargo that consisted of bananas , plywood and lumber . During the passage of the Tablas Strait there was an unspecified water ingress due to bad weather, as a result of which the Mactan sank. The deformations on the ship suggest the impact of a monster wave . The ship's command tried to get to the leeward side of the island Maestre de Campos and maneuvered the ship close to the east coast of the island in order to evacuate the ship. The ship sank at 5:30 a.m. and 657 people were rescued by the crew and passengers.
wreck
The wreck of the Mactan lies on the east side of the island near the shore at a depth of 20 to 52 meters on the slope of a coral reef . The mast with the radar extends to a depth of 18 meters below sea level.
