Maestro di San Francesco
Master of St. Francis of Assisi or Francis Master ( Italian Maestro di San Francesco ) is an Italian painter of unknown name who created frescoes and possibly glass pictures in the area around Perugia in Umbria , Italy . He was active between 1260 and 1280.
Naming
The Francis Master received his emergency name from the art historian Henry Thode after a picture in the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi , which depicts Saint Francis of Assisi with angels .
Works and style
Works by the Franciscan Master can mainly be seen in the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi , for example a cycle of frescoes in the nave of the lower church with five scenes from the Passion of Christ on the right and five scenes from the life of St. Francis on the left (these were damaged when the side chapels were later opened).
Despite the possible assistance of strangers in the creation of the works, they seem to have been planned by a single artist and show a uniform style. They are probably based on imitations of the late Giunta Pisano , but also show influences from other Umbrian artists such as Rainaldetto di Ranuccio , Simeone and Machilone from Spoleto and influences from contemporary illuminations such as the Bible by Giovanni da Gaibana from Padua .
The Master of St. Francis embodies an important aspect of the connection between Italian and Byzantine icon painting combined with detail painting and colors that are foreign to the Byzantine style.
