Magda Szabó
Magda Szabó [ ˈmɒɡdɒ ˈsɒboː ] (born October 5, 1917 in Debrecen , Austria-Hungary ; † November 19, 2007 in Kerepes near Gödöllő ) was a Hungarian writer .
Life
The daughter of a Calvinist family of civil servants completed a teaching degree in classical philology and literature in Debrecen and worked as a teacher between 1940 and 1945, after which she was employed in the Ministry of Religious and Educational Issues. In 1947 she made her debut with the collection of poems lamb . In 1949 she was banned from publication, which lasted until 1959, and was dismissed from civil service.
The best-known works by Szabó are the novels "The Fresco" ( Freskó , 1958), "The Other Esther" ( Az őz , 1959) and "The Slaughter Festival " ( Disznótor , 1960).
In 1978 Szabó received the Kossuth Prize , Hungary's highest award for artists; 2003 the Prix Femina . In 1993 she was appointed a member of the European Academy of Sciences and in the same year received an honorary doctorate from the Reformed Theological University of Debrecen .
Szabó was married to the author and translator Tibor Szobotka since 1947.
