Life

In 1960, Hans-Henning Paetzke was expelled from all grammar schools in the GDR for denigrating the head of state of the GDR . This was followed by: 1960–63 training as an actor, 1963 dismissal without notice by the Staatliche Dorftheater Prenzlau for violating citizenship obligations, 1963–64 serving a prison sentence for refusal to do military service , which he had to serve in the Schwarze Pumpe labor camp and in the Cottbus prison , 1967 high school diploma, 1967– 1976 studied classical philology, German literature and psychology in Halle / S., Budapest and Frankfurt / M., 1968 emigration to Hungary, 1973 to Frankfurt / M., 1981–85 persona non grata in the GDR, 1985–88 persona non grata in Hungary, 1994 return to Budapest.

Since 1968 Paetzke has worked as a freelance literary translator, editor, publicist and writer. In addition to around 70 book translations by internationally known Hungarian authors - u. a. several titles by György Konrád and Péter Esterházy - he has also published four of his own novels for renowned publishers such as Suhrkamp . His first under the pseudonym Maria Piontek saw several editions.

Hans-Henning Paetzke is a member of the Hungarian Association of Schoengeist Authors ( Szépírók Társasága ), the parallel organization to the Hungarian Writers' Association, from which well-known authors have resigned due to anti-Semitic tendencies.

Quote about Paetzke

"He lent his language to fictional and actual fates (from Miklós Mészöly to Béla Szász , from János Pilinszky to György Petri and Géza Szőcs , from Péter Esterházy to György Konrád , etc.) that he was able to immerse himself in those extraordinary careers with particularly deep empathy, that can be attributed to his own highly changeable curriculum vitae.
