Iván Szelényi

Iván Szelényi (born April 17, 1938 in Budapest ) is a well-known Hungarian sociologist and dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD). Szelényi's research interests include social inequality , stratification , poverty and ethnicity .

education

In 1960 Szelényi received an MA in economics from Corvinus University in Budapest and in 1973 a Ph.D. in philosophy and sociology and in 1990 a Dr. Sc. from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences .

After completing his main studies, Szelényi worked as a research assistant at the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (1960–1964) before moving to the Institute of Sociology at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1965–1967). There he took the position of scientific secretary in 1967 (1967-1970), but was then promoted to the department head for regional sociology of the institute (1970-1975). In 1975 Szelényi left Hungary for a visiting professorship at the University of Kent ( England ) and then followed a call to Flinders University in South Australia (1976-1980), where he became the endowed professor of sociology and chairman of the department of sociology. Thereafter, Szelényi took over a professorship in sociology (since 1985 the Karl Polanyi professorship in sociology) at the University of Wisconsin – Madison (1981–1986), but later went to the City University of New York (1986–1988), where he also became director of the Center for Social Research and responsible for the sociology program of the graduate school there. In 1988 Szelényi changed again and became professor of sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles (1988-1999), where he was also temporarily chairman of the department of sociology (1992-1995). In 1999 Szelényi followed a final call to Yale University , where he was transferred to the William Graham Sumner Professorship in Sociology and later retired. After all, Szelényi has been the foundation dean of social sciences at New York University Abu Dhabi since 2010.

In addition, Szelényi works as editor for the European Sociological Review (since 2000), the Journal of Comparative Family Studies (since 1969), Social forces (since 1999), Szociologia Szemle (since 1991) and Theory and Society (since 1987). In the past he was editor of the American Journal of Sociology (1987–1989), the American Sociological Review , the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Sociology (1983–1986), Easter European Politics and Societies (1989–1999), the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research (1976–1993), Sociological Forum (1987–1992), Szociologia (1972–1973) and Telos (1981–1983).

Personal

Iván Szelényi is married to Valeria Vanilia Majoros, with whom he has three children. Szelényi is a US citizen , but currently lives in Abu Dhabi .
