Géza Szőcs
Géza Szőcs (born August 21, 1953 in Târgu Mureș ; died November 5, 2020 in Budapest ) was a Romanian - Hungarian writer and politician in both countries.
Life
The son of the Romanian-Hungarian writer István Szőcs studied at the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj until 1979 . At the suggestion of András Sütő he received a Herder scholarship for the University of Vienna in 1979/80 .
After working in the literary studies seminar at the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj, Géza Szőcs went into political exile in Switzerland from 1986 to 1989 , where he worked as a journalist in Geneva . Between 1989 and 1990 he headed the Budapest studio of Radio Free Europe . In 1989 he became an employee of the Hungarian Writers' Union Magyar Napló .
In 1990 Szőcs returned to Cluj and became involved in the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania , for which he sat in the Romanian Senate from 1990 to 1992 . From 1993 to 2010 he was the editor of A Dunánál magazine in Hungary . He was co-editor of Magyar Szemle magazine and member of the supervisory authority of the Hungarian state television broadcaster Magyar Televízió (MTV).
In May 2010, Viktor Orbán appointed Szőcs to the Hungarian Orbán government as Minister of State for Culture at the Ministry of National Resources ( Miklós Réthelyi ) .
Géza Szőcs had five children.
He died on November 5, 2020 as a result of COVID-19 .
