The Magere Brug ("Skinny Bridge") is one of the few remaining wooden Dutch bridges . She walks across the Amstel River in the center of Amsterdam . It connects the banks of the Amstel at the level of the Kerkstraat (Kirchenstrasse), between the Keizersgracht ("Kaisergracht") and the Prinsengracht ("Prinzengracht"). The Magere Brug is a pull bridge that can be opened in the middle using a chain hoist. It consists of white painted wood, was built in 1691 and renovated in 1871 because it was too narrow. The last major renovation took place in 1969. Until 2003 it was open to all forms of road traffic, after a repair and restoration, only cyclists and pedestrians are currently passing the bridge. It is raised several times a day to allow larger ships to pass; Tour boats can also pass under the closed bridge. All bridges in Amsterdam are numbered, the Magere Brug is numbered 242.

The bridge is decorated with 1200 light bulbs that are switched on in the evening. Every year on the anniversary of Liberation Day (Dutch: bevrijdingsdag) there is a concert at the bridge, at which the king is usually present. This bridge can also be seen in numerous films, for example in the James Bond film Diamantenfieber from 1971. At the Amsterdam Light Art Festival 2012 , the city icon was staged by the internationally recognized Dutch light artist Titia Ex .
