Maggie Chapman

Maggie Chapman (born June 27, 1979 in Harare , Zimbabwe ) is a Scottish politician of the Scottish Green Party , of which she has been co-chair since 2013.

Life

Maggie Chapman came to Scotland from Zimbabwe in 1998 to study zoology in Edinburgh at the University of Edinburgh . In 2001 she graduated with a bachelor's degree and in 2003 did her master's degree in environmental management at the University of Stirling . She then began a PhD in environmental ethics at the Department of Geography at the University of Edinburgh. From 2006 to 2015 she taught cultural geography and environmental ethics at Edinburgh Napier University . In 2014, the University of Aberdeen students elected Maggie Chapman as rector, a position that includes legal representation of students in university administration.

Maggie Chapman became one of the first three councilors of the Scottish Green Party in Edinburgh in 2007. In 2013, she was the top candidate for the Scottish Greens for the 2014 European elections . In addition, she was elected co-chair of her party in November 2013, replacing Martha Wardrop . Chapman was confirmed in office in November 2015.

In June 2015, she stepped down from her councilor mandate to focus on her candidacy in the North East Scotland constituency in the 2016 Scottish Parliament elections . In the by-election that followed, Marion Donaldson was elected to the City Council by the Labor Party .
