Magic Slim
Magic Slim (actually Morris Holt ; born August 7, 1937 in Torrence , Mississippi , † February 21, 2013 in Philadelphia ) was an American blues guitarist, singer and songwriter. With his band "The Teardrops" he was - next to Magic Sam - the best known representative of the "West Side Chicago Blues".
Life
Magic Slim originally played the piano. However, in an accident, he lost a finger and was therefore no longer able to do so. In 1955 he played in Robert Perkins' band "Mr. Pitiful & the Teardrops" for some time in Chicago before returning to Mississippi.
In 1965 he tried again in Chicago with his brothers Nick and Lee Baby. They did some recordings as "Magic Slim & the Teardrops" and achieved considerable success. Their big breakthrough came in 1977 with the album Born On A Bad Sign .
Magic Slim & the Teardrops received the Living Blues Award in 2000 and a Handy Award in 2003 as blues band of the year. Magic Slim has won a total of six Handy Awards in the course of its career (as of 2006).
