Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography

MRCP: (a) gallbladder with stones, (b) stones in the bile duct, (c) pancreatic duct, (d) fluid in the duodenum.
MRCP in pancreas divisum : (a) gallbladder, (b) bile duct that crosses the (c) main pancreatic duct, (d) minor pancreatic duct, (e) hollow renal system.

The magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (also MRCP and MR cholangiopancreatography ) is a non-invasive method for the preparation of the biliary system and the main ducts of the pancreas by means of magnetic resonance imaging . In this case, the water signal is selectively excited in the MRT with a subsequent three-dimensional evaluation.

The MRCP is used to diagnose bile duct stones , pancreatitis and malignant and benign tumors of the bile ducts or the pancreas .

The MRCP is usually carried out as a so-called one-stop-shop examination. H. performed in conjunction with angio MRI .

Compared to other procedures

Compared to ERCP, MRCP is non-invasive and therefore significantly less risky. However, there is no possibility of therapeutic intervention, e.g. B. for obtaining histological material or for therapeutic stone removal.

In contrast to ERCP, MRCP does not require the administration of contrast media.

Another method for displaying the biliary tract and especially for sensitive imaging of the head of the pancreas is endosonography (EUS).
