Magu is a district in the north of Tanzania in the Mwanza region , its administrative center is in the city of the same name Magu . The district borders in the north on Lake Victoria , in the east on the Simiyu region , in the south on the districts Kwimba and Missungwi and in the west on the district Ilemela .

geography

The district has a size of 2,666 square kilometers and around 300,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). Lake Victoria accounts for over 1,100 square kilometers of the area, the land area is 1,546 square kilometers. From the lake, which is over 1,100 meters above sea level, the land rises gently and hilly to the south and east to around 1,300 meters. There are two rainy seasons in Magu. Short rain showers fall from October to December, from March to May there is more extensive rainfall. The annual average of 700 to 1000 millimeters of rain falls. Temperatures vary from 18 to 20 degrees Celsius in the rainy season and from 26 to 30 degrees in the dry season.

Magu became an independent district in 1974 when it was separated from the Kwimba district.

population

The population increased from 244,356 in the 2002 census to 299,759 in 2012. That corresponds to an annual growth of two percent. This year, 58 percent of those over five spoke Swahili, eleven percent Swahili and English, and just over 30 percent were illiterate.

Facilities and services

  • Education: There are 114 primary schools and 26 secondary schools in the district for youth education. Eleven of the primary schools are privately run and six of the secondary schools are private schools.
  • Health: A district hospital and 48 health facilities are available to provide medical care for the population.

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Agriculture: The main industry is agriculture. The most important cultivation product for personal consumption is maize. Beans, sweet potatoes, peas, rice, millet and cassava are also grown. Mainly cotton is planted for sale. Around half of the 51,000 households kept farm animals in 2012. Mainly chickens, goats and cattle were kept.
  • Roads: The most important road connection is the paved national road T4 from Mwanza in the west through the district capital Magu and further along Lake Victoria to the north to Kenya .

Attractions

  • Sukuma Museum: Bujora is home to the Sukuma Open Air Museum founded by Canadian missionary David Clement in 1950.
