Maha Sang (born October 27, 1945 in Wiang Negern , one of the three larger principalities of the Wa people ). He is the son of the ruler Ta Hpawng. Wiang Negern lies north of Panghsang , the capital of Wa State , on the border between Myanmar and the Chinese province of Yunnan .

Since 1968 he fought against the Burmese Communist Party (CPB). After several defeats he moved to the Thai border, where he founded the WNO Wa National Organization . The armed arm of the WNO, the WNA Wa National Army , is still fighting the Myanmar central government, the State Council for Peace and Development (SDPC).

In 1989 Maha Sang was arrested in Panghsang by members of the UWSA United Wa State Army . He wanted to hold talks with other members of the NDF National Democratic Front about cooperation with the UWSP. He was accused of collaborating with Khun Sa , the leader of the Muang Tai Army , the archenemy of the UWSA. Maha Sang later managed to escape and was seen again in Mae Hong Son , Thailand, in early January .

In 2005 Maha Sang was arrested by the Thai police in connection with drug offenses. Although the allegations have not been confirmed, Maha Sang remains in jail in the Thai province. Maha Sang is alleged to have been involved in a 1985 shooting between Thai Border Patrol Police units and the WNA in Mae Hong Son .
