The Mahaweli ( Sinhala : මහවැලි ගඟ mahavæli gaṅga, Tamil : மகாவலி ஆறு mahāvali āṟu or மகாவலி கங்கை mahāvali gaṅgai ) is the longest river in Sri Lanka with a length of 335 km . Of all the rivers in the country, it has the largest catchment area, which takes up a fifth of the island.

Hydrometry

The data shown in the diagram were taken at the Peradeniya measuring station between 1964 and 1993 in m³ / s. The flow rate observed there was fed by a small part of the river's catchment area.

Tributaries

use

The river flows into the Bay of Bengal on the southwest coast of Trincomalee Bay. The bay has several submarine canyons that make it one of the largest natural deep sea harbors in the world. The Mahaweli itself and its tributaries are repeatedly dammed to ensure the irrigation of arid areas. Six dams are also used to generate electricity.
