Mahmud Osman

Mahmud Osman (* 1938 in Silemani ) is a Kurdish politician from Iraq . Mahmud Osman studied medicine at the University of Silemani and received his doctorate thereafter. He began his political career when he joined the Democratic Party of Kurdistan (DPK) in 1962 . He rose rapidly within the party, so that in 1968 he became Mustafa Barzani's deputy . In 1970 he negotiated a ceasefire agreement with the Iraqi government.

In 1980, after leaving the KDP, he founded the Kurdish Socialist Party together with Rasul Mahmend and Adnan Mufti . Thus Mahmud Osman stood against the two traditional Kurdish parties DPK and Patriotic Union Kurdistan (PUK). In 1992 he took part in the election for the Kurdish parliament . But in the same year he went to England and did not return until 1995. As an important politician, he negotiated a ceasefire between the KDP and the PUK in 2001. After the US invasion and the third Gulf War , Osman became a member of the Iraqi governing council . The Turkey protested his membership because they him because of too close relations with the Kurdistan Workers Party accused of making him do a mouthpiece for the PKK in the Iraqi Governing Council. Mahmud Osman has been a member of the Iraqi parliament since 2004 .
