The Mahood Lake is a lake in the central eastern part of the Canadian province of British Columbia . The lake was named after the surveyor James Adams Mahood († 1901).
Mahood Lake is located in the south of the Quesnel Highlands at an altitude of 629 m . It is located in the far west of Wells Gray Provincial Park . The lake has a maximum length in the WSW-ONE direction of 20.3 km. The width of the lake is 1.5 km. The lake covers an area of 33.3 km² and has a maximum water depth of 197 m. At its western end, the Canim River and Deception Creek flow into the lake. At the eastern end of the lake, Mahood Lake is drained by the Mahood River . On the southwestern shore of the lake is the Mahood Lake campground operated by the provincial park . The lake has a higher water temperature than the rest of the lakes in the provincial park. This is because, unlike the other lakes, it is not glacier-fed. Mahood Lake is accessible from 100 Mile House via a 88 km stretch of paved road that runs along the south shore of Canim Lake further west . Another access is a 65 km long gravel road that branches off from British Columbia Highway 24 at Interlakes Corner .
Fish fauna
The following fish species are found in the lake: Sockeye salmon (Kokanee, the non-anadromous form), herring whitefish ( Coregonus clupeaformis ), burbot ( Lota lota ), rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) and American arctic char ( Salvelinus namaycush ).
