The valenciennea puellaris ( Valenciennea puellaris ) is a kind from the family of gobies with about 20 centimeters in length.
distribution
The Maiden sleeper goby lives in the Indo-Pacific . It lives in sandy, clear lagoons and on outer reefs in water depths of up to 30 meters.
Way of life
Maiden sleeper gobies live in pairs in caves, which they dig under rocks lying on the sand.
nutrition
To eat, they filter sand through their gills and eat small crustaceans living in it.
Aquarium keeping
The Maiden sleeper goby is an easy-to-care-for fish for the saltwater aquarium . A layer of sand several centimeters thick is required in the pool in which the animals can build their burrows. Due to their way of life and their form of nutrition, they are well suited to loosening up the substrate in the aquarium and keeping it clean. They also do not have the unpleasant property of climbing up with sand in their mouths and distributing it over cnidarians , as other gobies with a similar way of life sometimes do.
If possible, Maiden sleeper gobies should be used in pairs in the aquarium. A subsequent mating often fails because gender differences cannot be externally recognized.
Maiden sleeper gobies have a tendency to jump out of the water in frightful situations. Therefore, open pools should be bordered at least 15 cm high. Alternatively, a weak night light can be installed to help the fish find their way around.
