Main ferry Sommerach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The former Main Ferry Sommerach was a bar ferry on the Main . It ran between Sommerach and the opposite Neuses am Berg in today's Kitzingen district . The ferry service was stopped in 1959.

history

The ferry was first mentioned in a document in the 17th century. However, the ferry station is probably older and goes back to a ford that has always allowed an easy transition at the ferry station. A plague legend from Sommerach describes the crossing of the disease by ferry. In addition, a pilgrimage to the Church of Maria im Sand in Dettelbach was established in 1749 only because the ferry enabled a quick transition to the other bank of the Main.

On July 12, 1885, the community of Sommerach leased the ferry to Johann Schlereth. This was preceded by tough negotiations with the community. After the construction of the Dettelbach Bahnhof – Dettelbach Stadt railway line , the ferry rights were only leased for a period of one year because an increase in crossings was expected. At this point in time, ferry rights were always linked to fishing rights in the branches of the Main.

In 1901, the inventory moved into the ferry house near the river as an apartment. In addition, the ferries were obliged to buy a driving and a Weidschelch . A maximum of 70 people could be overtaken. Only the soldiers of the Bavarian army and the frequent processions of the villagers were allowed to translate free of charge . In 1901 Georg Hehn was awarded the ferry rights. He handed it over to Franz M. Östreicher in 1910. Now the fish law had been separated for the first time.

In 1920 passengers paid 20 pfennigs for the crossing . At this point in time, there was already a noticeable decrease in crossings due to the increase in automobile traffic. In 1930, however, a new ferry bridge was built, which was equipped with a high wire until 1945 . In 1956 the Würzburg Waterways Authority complained about the ferry and temporarily shut it down. Now there was only one bar ferry for 25 to 30 people. On January 9, 1959, the ferry was finally shut down.
