The former Main ferry Sulzfeld am Main was a Schelch ferry on the Main . It ran between Sulzfeld am Main and the district of Marktsteft in today's Kitzingen district . The ferry was abandoned in the second half of the 20th century.

history

The Main ferry was first mentioned in the 14th century. The ford previously located here was probably converted into a ferry because the traffic at this point increased. In the 14th century there was already half a ferry right for Sulzfeld, the so-called " Schelchfahr ". The term refers to the size of the ferry to be used. The ferry in the opposite Marktsteft, however, had received full ferry rights.

In 1521 the Sulzfelder asked Emperor Charles V to grant full ferry rights and the construction of a so-called ship bridge . However, this ship bridge should only be used when necessary, because the Marktstefter ferry continued to make the most crossings. In the year 1558 the Sulzfeld ferry law was extended again, now commercial goods could also be transported. This right was confirmed in 1580 by Emperor Rudolf II .

Although both ferries between Sulzfeld and Marktsteft now had equal rights, the Marktstefter facility was able to book the most crossings. That is why the Sulzfelder ferry rights, which were fought for in the 16th century, soon came into effect. Only a schelch was used to transport individuals. During the entire early modern period , the Marktstefter ferry also took over the passage of the merchandise for the Sulzfelder.

With the advent of other means of transport and in particular the construction of bridges across the Main in the 20th century, the ferries became subsidized companies. The municipality of Marktsteft had to spend large amounts of money every year to continue to finance the ferry. In 1955, the municipality of Sulzfeld am Main therefore took over the business. The Kitzingen district council approved the relocation of the facility to the Sulzfeld district . The ferry still existed in 1961 and was finally abandoned in the second half of the 20th century.
