Main ferry Marktsteft

The former Main Ferry Marktsteft was a motor ferry on the Main . It ran between Marktsteft and the district of Sulzfeld am Main in today's Kitzingen district . The ferry was moved to Sulzfeld am Main in 1955.

history

The ferry between Marktsteft and Sulzfeld am Main was built at an old ford in the early Middle Ages . In the early days, the Lords of Hohenlohe and the Dompropstei of the Würzburg bishopric shared ferry rights. In order to avoid disputes between the two gentlemen, the rights were delimited by so-called wisdoms . It was regulated that the gentlemen of Hohenlohe were allowed to translate first when both gentlemen arrived at the same time.

Unlike the ferry that was later established in nearby Sulzfeld, the ferry always had the right to cross pedestrians, carts and wagons. In 1608 the ride came to the Creglingen district of the Margraviate of Ansbach . However, a short time later a margrave subject acquired the ferry, which also became his property. The Marktstefter ferry had a large catchment area in the 18th century. Many people from Michelfelder and Mainbernheim took the Marktstefter ferry across.

In 1826 the ferryman Ludwig Roth sold the ferry rights to the Vogel family. In 1840 the community issued a new ferry regulation, which was adopted by the ferrymen Konrad and Balthasar Vogel. At that time, several ferries were in use. The ferrymen Christoph and Adam Vogel then planned to build a chain ferry in 1890 in order to cope with the growing traffic. However, the introduction of chain shipping on the Main ruined the plans.

Nevertheless, in 1897 the ferrymen bought a new ferry. However, this was soon considered too difficult. Before the First World War , the construction of a high-wire ferry was planned. The construction of the plant was postponed due to the war. In 1921 construction was postponed again before the Bavarian state subsidized the facility through grants. However, the Segnitz - Kitzingen district road was built in the immediate vicinity in the first half of the 20th century .

The ferryman Christoph Vogel held his shares in the ferry until 1931 and then handed it over to Martin Sandreuter and Friedrich Seitz. The ferry stopped in the winter of 1939/1940 due to the heavy ice drift. After the Second World War , new plans came up to promote a high-wire ferry. The currency reform let these plans peter out again. The ferry became a grant business for the community and in 1955 the ferry rights were granted to nearby Sulzfeld am Main.

Initially, the ferry station was served with a so-called Schelch . In the 19th century, the parallel use with a Schelch and a ferry bridge prevailed. The driving times were based on the hours of sunshine of the day. In summer, the ferry crossed between 4 a.m. and 9 p.m., while in winter it only sailed between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. In 1897 a motor ferry was purchased.
