Mait Klaassen (born January 23, 1955 in Tartu ) is an Estonian scientist and politician .

Science and politics

Mait Klaassen attended middle school in Tartu, South Estonia, until 1973. In 1978 he graduated from the Estonian Agricultural Academy ( Eesti Põllumajanduse Akadeemia ) in veterinary medicine . In 1989 he received his doctorate as a candidate in science . From 1986 to 1989 he was a member of the CPSU .

1989/1990 he was a scientist in Finland Helsinki active. From 1990 Klaassen held the chair for veterinary medicine at the Estonian University of Agriculture ( Eesti Põllumajandusülikool ) in Tartu. From 1993 to 1996 he was rector of the university. From 1996 to 1999 he was a member of the Tartu City Council.

From March 1997 to March 1999, Mait Klaassen was Minister of Education of the Republic of Estonia in the cabinet of Prime Minister Mart Siimann . From 1998 to 2000 Klaassen was a member of the liberal Estonian coalition party . From 2000 to 2007 he was a member of the liberal Estonian Reform Party .

After leaving the cabinet, Klaassen was director of the Võru County Vocational Training Center in 1999/2000 . From 2000 to 2004 he was the District Administrator of Võru County. From 2004 to 2007 Klaassen was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). Since January 1st, 2008 he has been the rector of the Estonian University of Environmental Sciences in Tartu.

Private life

Mait Klaassen is married and has three children.
