Maitreesh Ghatak

Maitreesh Ghatak ( Bengali মৈত্রীশ ঘটক Maitrīś Ghaṭak ) is an Indian economist and university professor at the London School of Economics (LSE). His economic fields of interest are development economics , organizational economics and public economics. Ghatak is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Development Economics .

Maitreesh Ghatak attended the Presidency College at the University of Calcutta from 1986 to 1989 , from which he received a B.Sc. in economics. He later moved to the Delhi School of Economics at the University of Delhi , which gave him an M.Sc. awarded in economics. Ghatak then received his PhD from Harvard University under the supervision of Eric Maskins and received a Ph.D. in economics.

Professional background

After his Ph.D. Ghatak accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago , before joining the London School of Economics in 2002, where he became Associate Professor of Economics. Finally, in 2004 Ghatak was promoted to full professor for economics at the LSE.

In addition, Ghatak is currently editor-in-chief of the Journal of Development Economics and previously worked as an editor for the Review of Economic Studies (2002–2011), the Journal of Comparative Economics (2009–2012) and Economics of Transition (2003–2005).

In addition, Ghatak has been Director of the Economic Organization and Public Policy Program (EOPP) at STICERD since 2005 and Chief Economist of the International Growth Center since 2010 . Ghatak also works for the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD), Theoretical Research in Development Economics ThReD and researches for the Center for Economic Policy Research , the Center on Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy ( University of Warwick ) and the Leverhulme Center for Market and Public Organization ( University of Bristol ).

In 2018 Ghatak was elected to the British Academy .

Ghatak's research spans a variety of different areas including microfinance , property rights , nonprofits , public services, land acquisition, agent incentives, poverty traps, career choices, capital market anomalies , rent, and discrimination.

According to the economic publications database IDEAS , Ghatak belongs to the 5% of the most research-intensive economists (rank 1452) in the overall ranking. Also under criteria such as "number of citations" or "number of magazine pages" Ghatak clearly belongs to the top 5% of the economists recorded in the database. Ghatak's most cited article is entitled " The Economics of Lending with Joint Liability: Theory and Practice " (1999) and was co- authored with Timothy Guinnane . In this article, Ghatak and Guinnane examine the economic rationale behind Joint Liability Lending as a means of partially addressing two central microfinance problems - asymmetrical information and the lack of a valuable pledge.
