Maiwand is a place in the province of Kandahar in Afghanistan and is located about 80 km west of the provincial capital Kandahar .
The Battle of Maiwand took place in Maiwand on July 27, 1880 during the Second Anglo-Afghan War . The Afghans, led by Ayub Khan , inflicted one of the greatest defeats in their history on the British, killing 969 British soldiers.
