The Makaawhio River , formerly also known as the Jacobs River , is a small river around 30 km long in the West Coast region on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The river has its source on the northwest flank of the 2,441  m high Fettes Peak massif , meanders from there around 30 km along the Bannock Brae Range in a north-westerly direction, and then 3.5 km west of the Jacobs River farm settlement and State Highway 6 in the Bruce Bay flows into the Tasman Sea. The Jacobs River farm estate lies on the river .

history

Section 38 of the Ngāi Tahu Claims Settlement Act 1998 under the title " Statutory acknowledgment for Makaawhio ( Jacobs River ) " grants the Ngāi Tahu tribe that the area of ​​the Makaawhio River is of cultural, spiritual and historical importance and can be assigned to their tribe.
