Kabuki (actually January Hennig ) is a German drum-and-bass - DJ and - musician and label owner from Frankfurt .

Life

In his youth, Hennig first played the guitar and completed a classical music education. Before he turned to electronic music , he worked as a music teacher. He named his alias Kabuki ( Japanese for 'song and dance') after the Japanese theater of the same name . Together with the Frankfurt producer Mainframe (Frank Marheineke) he is responsible for projects such as Makai and Megashira. The Precision Breakbeat Research label they founded in 1996 is one of the first German drum and bass labels. The first international release followed in 2000 on the Reinforced Records label founded by 4hero .

One of Kabuki's best-known works is the piece Beneath the Mask , published as Makai (mainframe and Kabuki) , which is unusual for drum-and-bass pieces due to the concise samples from the soundtrack to the anime film Ghost in the Shell, written by the Japanese Kenji Kawai high recognition value . The Megashira project is also one of the first attempts to produce drum and bass live. All instruments for the pieces are played by studio musicians who also accompany the kabuki and mainframe during their live performances.

Together with the Frankfurt hip-hop producer Roey Marquis II , Kabuki founded the MK2 project in 1998, which was one of the first collaborations between drum-and-bass and hip-hop artists.

He continues to publish in cooperation with other musicians under the project names Loner, Ono Sendai and Powaflex. Kabuki spends most of his time in Japan , where he produces soundtracks for Playstation games, among other things .
