Makaria (daughter of Hades)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Makaria (Greek Μακαρία "bliss", Latin Macaria) is the daughter of Hades and probably Persephone in Greek mythology . She embodies the blessed death.

It is only mentioned in the Suda . There it is also understood as a euphemism . Instead of getting into "misery and damnation", the phrase "to attain bliss" is used. This is mainly used by people ( heroes ) who, because of their courage, put themselves in danger. The dead were also called "the blessed". The island of the blessed is called "μακάρων νη̂σοι (makárôn nêsoi) in Greek . A connection to Makaria can be established in this way. The Macaronesian islands are also derived from it.
