Makarij ( Ukrainian Макарій , secular name Микола Іванович Малетич Mykola Ivanovich Maletytsch ; born October 1, 1944 in Krasne , Turka Rajon , Lviv Oblast , USSR ) has been Metropolitan and Chairman of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Church since 2015 .

Life

He was one of ten children in a farming family. A sister and a brother died in childhood. His mother and father died early, so the family had to grow up alone with five brothers and two sisters.

He married in 1964. He did not do military service, instead he tried unsuccessfully in 1973/74 to start studying at the Spiritual Academy in Odessa . In 1975 worked in a factory in Penza Oblast . He was ordained a deacon on January 18, 1975. At that time he was working in Kostyantynivka . He was ordained a priest on August 10 of the same year. In 1982 he graduated from the Moscow Spiritual Seminary in absentia. As a pastor he worked in Donetsk Oblast , Luhansk Oblast and Rostov Oblast . In Lviv Oblast he worked in the village of Shehyni until 1996 . In 1989 he left the Russian Orthodox Church and began serving in the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. In 1993 his wife died. On November 3, 1996 he was ordained bishop in Lviv under the name Makarij. On June 25, 1997, he was appointed to the Rivne and Volyn Eparchy . On July 22nd, 2008 he was awarded the Order of Merit of Ukraine 3rd Class. Since 2015 he has been the chairman of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church.

On October 11, 2018 through and him from the Moscow Patriarchate was Patriarch Filaret imposed excommunication by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Opel Bartholomew I. invalidated.
