Macarius III
Macarius III (* February 18, 1872 in Mahalla al-Kubra , Egypt; † August 31, 1945 in Cairo ) was the 114th Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark ( Coptic Church ).
Makarius was Metropolitan of Assiut , the capital of Upper Egypt , for 49 years . He was a public leader and led the Copts in their political movements, first in the Consolidation Movement of 1910 and later in the National Revolution in Egypt of 1919 .
Due to his spiritual reputation as Metropolitan of Assiut he was elected Pope and held the office from February 4, 1944 to August 31, 1945. His death, which occurred unexpectedly quickly, did not allow him to carry out his plans. He had a good knowledge of the Arabic, French, Coptic, English, Greek and Aramaic languages. He was an expert in the liturgical studies of the Coptic Church as well as biblical studies. He was the patron of many Coptic priests, such as Father Abuna Marcos Sergios, Ibrahim Luka and the archdeacon Iskander Hanna.
