Al-Mahalla al-Kubra ( Arabic المحلة الكبرى, DMG al-Maḥalla al-Kubrā ), Egyptian-Arabic El Mahalla El Kobra , is an Egyptian city on the eastern arm of the Nile in the governorate of al-Gharbiyya . With around 522,799 inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in the Nile Delta and the country . In addition to agriculture, the textile industry is the most important branch of the economy. Al-Mahalla al-Kubra is home to the soccer club Ghazl El-Mehalla , which won the Egyptian championship in 1973.

In al-Mahalla al-Kubra there is the largest factory in Egypt, the " Misr spinning and weaving mill ". From the factory strikes in April 2008, the youth movement of April 6th developed in solidarity and became an important element of the later revolution in Egypt in 2011 .

To the southwest of Al-Mahalla al-Kubra is a transmitter mast for broadcasting VHF radio and television programs, 323 meters the tallest man-made structure in Egypt.
