Muhammad Badi'e (2011)

Muhammad Badi'e ( Arabic محمد بديع, DMG Muḥammad Badīʿ ; * August 7, 1943 in al-Mahalla al-Kubra ) is an Egyptian university professor, politician and veterinarian. Since January 2010 he has been the ninth chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood .

Life

Badi'e graduated from Veterinary Medicine in 1966 and teaches at Bani Suwaif University . Because of his membership in the Muslim Brotherhood, he spent several years in prison. The remainder of a 15-year prison sentence was released in 1974 after nine years by President Anwar as-Sadat . In 1998 he was imprisoned for 75 days, from 1999 for three years.

In mid-2012, Mohammed Morsi , a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, came to power. Many of his measures to Islamize Egypt met with protests. In the first half of 2013 the protests grew stronger; In July, the Egyptian military issued an ultimatum to Morsi to resolve the crisis and withdrew it when the ultimatum had expired.

Since then, civil war-like conditions have prevailed in parts of Egypt (see State Crisis in Egypt 2013 ). Badi'e was arrested on the night of August 19-20, 2013. A large part of the Islamist leadership was imprisoned. As a result, Badi'e was among the accused in criminal trials in several cities in Egypt:

  • On December 9, 2013, he was tried for “inciting murder” and “disturbing public order”. In addition to Badi'e, his closest confidants Essam el Erian and Mohamed el Beltagy and twelve other members had to answer for "terrorism and illegal possession of weapons". This involved clashes on July 15, particularly at a police building in Giza. The court adjourned the trial to February 16, 2014 due to the tumult in the courtroom. On June 19, 2014, Badi'e was sentenced to death by a court in Giza ,
  • A case against Badi'e and others, which should have started in Cairo at the end of October 2013 , reported that two judges withdrew one after the other (because of bias ). It concerned the death of demonstrators who stormed the Muslim Brotherhood headquarters in Cairo on June 30, 2013 .
  • On April 28, 2014, Badi'e was sentenced to death by hanging along with hundreds of other Mursi supporters in Al-Minya . Among other things, they are said to have stormed a police station during the protests against the deposition of Morsis in 2013 in al-Minya Governorate , killing an officer. On June 21, 2014, 183 of the death sentences were confirmed, including Badi'es.
  • Badi'e was sentenced to death on June 7, 2014 in Shubra al-Khaimah in connection with the blockade of a street in Qalyub , and on July 5, 2014, the sentence in Banha was reduced to life imprisonment.
