The Makassar tarsier ( Tarsius fuscus ) is a relatively unknown and little researched primate species from the group of tarsier . It occurs on the southwestern peninsula of Sulawesi , its range corresponds to that of the Mohrenmakak ( Macaca maura ).

Makassar lemurs live in the southwest of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi

features

Makassar tarsier, like all tarsier, are very small primates. Their head-torso length is about 12.5 cm, the tail length about 24 to 26 cm. The weight is 126 to 133 g for males and 113 to 124 g for females. The middle and rear sections of the tail are provided with three rows of black, bristly hairs that become increasingly longer towards the rear. The underside of the tail is scaly. The fur is red-brown on the upper side and cream-colored on the belly. There is a black spot on either side of the snout, and a white one behind each ear.

They differ from other species of the group, among other things, by their comparatively short skull, which is always shorter than that of the Diana Koboldmakis ( Tarsius dentatus ). The rows of teeth are also short. In the upper jaw there is a clear diastema between the incisor I2 and the canine. The tail is remarkably long.

Way of life

The Makassar tarsier lives in a wide variety of habitats. These include primary and secondary rainforests, dry forests, mangrove forests , mountain forests up to an altitude of 1500 meters, plantations and gardens. In the Bantimurung-Bulusaraung National Park , it occurs in a karst region and sleeps in small caves in the limestone. The exact way of life of the species has not yet been researched. Like other goblin lemurs, it will be nocturnal, will always return to its usual sleeping places and feed mainly on insects and small vertebrates.
