In the park there are several buildings, ponds and a so-called "echo pavilion", in which your own voice can be heard as an echo with a time delay.

history

In 1787 the park was founded by the Zagreb bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac. Vrhovac decreed that the extensive forests, which were owned by the bishop, should be set up and used as a park.

The name of the park was first mentioned in written documents in 1791. Since 1794 Maksimir has been the first public park in this part of Europe. At the end of the 18th century, the Zvjerinjak was founded as a forerunner of the zoo.

The park was further developed under Bishop Juraj Haulik . The Viennese architect Franz Schücht designed almost all buildings and pavilions . The garden architect Michael Sebastian Riedl shaped the further landscape design of the park. After Juraj Haulik's death in 1869, more pavilions, huts, sculptures and gardens were built.

In 1925, today's Zagreb Zoo ( Zoološki vrt grada Zagreba ) was founded on the Swan Island (Labuđi otok ) under the then mayor Vjekoslav Heinzel. The Maksimir Park is a cultural and natural monument under special state protection.
