Malacolimax is a genus of the nudibranch family of the Schnegel (Limacidae) from the suborder of the land snails (Stylommatophora). It currently only includes three or four species.

features

The species of the genus Malacolimax are rather small to medium-sized representatives of the snails with an extended length of about 5 cm. The keel is quite short and weak. The species are often uniformly colored or provided with only weak longitudinal bands, rarely spotted. The sole of the foot is one color.

In the hermaphroditic genital apparatus, the penis is briefly piston-shaped, spherical or cylindrical. The short sperm duct ( vas deferens ) and penis retractor lie next to the penis and are fused with it. Internally, the penis has a complex pilaster that almost fills the lumen . A stimulator sits on the pilaster. The fallopian tube is moderately long, the stem of the spermathec is short.

The copulatrix bursa opens into the penis or near the junction of the penis and atrium. The prostate is fused with the fallopian tube.

In the digestive tract, the intestine is not twisted with three loops, the second intestinal loop is shorter than the third and first loop.

Geographical distribution, habitat and way of life

The species of the genus Malacolimax are restricted to Western and Central Europe, Southeastern Europe and the Canary Islands.

Taxonomy

The genus Malacolimax was established by August Wilhelm Malm in 1868. The type species is Limax tenellus Müller, 1774 (mushroom snail) by monotype. Malacolimax was also considered a subgenus of Limax by some authors . Currently three or four species are placed in the genus, with Malacolimax kostalii being regarded by some authors as a synonym of Malacolimax tenellus . In contrast, Fauna Europaea lists four species as valid.
