The Malay tree falcon ( Falco severus ) is a bird from the family of the falcons ( Falco ) within the subfamily of the real falcons (Falconinae).

The bird is found in India , Indonesia , Laos , Papua New Guinea , the Philippines , Thailand and rarely in Sri Lanka .

The distribution area includes open forest areas with clearings from mangroves at sea level to deciduous forests on the Himalayan foothills up to 1800–2400 m altitude.

The Malay tree falcon is 24–130 cm tall, weighs between 168 and 249 g, the wingspan is 61–69 cm. It is a relatively small, short-tailed black and red-brown feathered hawk. The plain red-brown underside distinguishes it from the otherwise similar tree falcon . The female is larger and heavier than the male. Young birds have a brown upper side and a reddish brown to black striped underside.

Geographic variation

The species is considered to be monotypical .

Some authors list the representative, which occurs in Sulawesi , Moluccas to New Guinea, as Falco severus papuanus Meyer & Wiglesworth , 1893, as a separate subspecies .

The call of the male is described as a loud, quickly repeated "kee-kee-kee ...".

Way of life

The food mainly consists of insects , bats and small birds, which are hunted and beaten in the air from a high hide, often in dead trees. He also often hunts dragonflies over bodies of water. The species is crepuscular .

The breeding season varies from region to region between March and July. It is incubated in crow or magpie nests , usually 3–4 eggs are laid.

Birds from the Himalayas overwinter in southern India, in other regions they are resident birds .

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
