The original text of the song and the translation by Rupert Moser are:

Malaika, Nakupenda Malaika
Malaika, Nakupenda Malaika
Nami nifanyeje, Kijana mwenzio
Nashindwa na mali sina, we,
Ningekuoa Malaika
Nashindwa na mali sina, we,
Ningekuoa Malaika

Kidege, hukuwaza kidege
Nami nifanyeje, Kijana mwenzio
Nashindwa na mali sina, we,
Ningekuoa Malaika
Nashindwa na mali sina, we,
Ningekuoa Malaika

Pesa zasumbua roho yangu
Pesa zasumbua roho yangu
Nami nifanyeje, kijana mwenzio
Ningekuoa Malaika
Nashndwa na mali sina, we
Ningekuoa Malaika

Angel, I love you, angel
Angel, I love you, angel
And I, what should I do, your young friend
I am conquered by the bride price, (because) I don't have one, you
I would (otherwise) marry you, angel
I will Conquered by the bride price, which I don't have, you
I would (otherwise) marry you, angel

Little bird, I think of you, little bird
And I, what should I do, your young friend
I am subjugated by the bride price, (because) me have none, you
I would (otherwise) marry you, angel
I am subjugated by the bride price, (because) I have none, you
I would (otherwise) marry you, angel

The money (that I lack) oppresses my soul
The money (that I am missing) depresses my soul
And I, what should I do, your young friend
I would marry you, angel
I am conquered by the bride price, (because) I have none, you
I would (otherwise) marry you, angel
