Malam Jabba

Malam Jabba ( Urdu مالم جبہ Malam Jabba ) is a recreation center in Pakistan's Swat Valley , Karakoram . The recreation center is about 40 km from the main town of the Swat Valley, Saidu Sharif , and can be reached by car via a mountain road. The distance from Islamabad is 314 km.

founding

The area was selected as a suitable location for a ski station in 1962 . This selection was made on the basis of an expertise from members of the Academic-Social Working Group of Austria (ASAG), who were invited to investigations by the Pakistani government on the recommendation of the then Austrian Ambassador Fritz Kolb .

As a result, a hotel and ski lifts were built. However, the hotel stood empty for years and could not be used because there were disputes about the operator. Nevertheless, the area turned out to be a tourist magnet. From around 1998 the hotel was operated by the Pakistan Tourist Development Corporation (PTDC). For a decade, Malam Jabba was the most famous ski station in Pakistan and was particularly popular with winter sports enthusiasts from Islamabad and Peshawar , including numerous students. In the summer too, many Pakistanis, but also foreigners who work in Pakistan, visited the recreation center, which is 2500 m above sea level, because of the refreshing climate.

destruction

In the course of unrest in the Swat Valley (the Pakistani military fought against Taliban militias), the facilities were closed in 2007 and set on fire in June 2008.
