Malates

Malate anion

Malates are the salts and esters of malic acid (from Latin malum = apple, not to be confused with maleates , the esters and salts of maleic acid ). Salts consist of malate anions - OOC – CH 2 –CHOH – COO - and associated cations . Examples are sodium malate (C 4 H 4 Na 2 O 5 ), magnesium malate (C 4 H 4 MgO 5 ), potassium malate (C 4 H 4 K 2 O 5 ) and ammonium malate (C 4 H 12 N 2 O 5 ). There are also monomalates in which only one carboxy group forms the salt.
