The Male 'Water & Sewerage Company Pvt. Ltd ( MWSC ) is a public utility company in the Maldives . MWSC is active in the field of water supply and has received the supply monopoly for the capital Malé from the state for 20 years . Like the energy supplier State Electric Company Limited, the company is largely owned by the Maldivian state and subordinate to the Ministry of Health.

History and supply

Malé's water supply was originally ensured with wells from which fresh water was pumped. With the growth of the city and the associated increase in water demand, the water quality continued to decline and the fresh water began to become too salty. The predecessor of MWSC was the Maldives Water and Sanitation Authority (MWSA), founded in 1992 , which built up the water supply for Malé with the help of the Danish aid organization DANIDA.

In March 1995, an agreement was signed with HOH Water Technology and the IFU (Danish Industrialization Fund for Developing Countries) to set up a joint venture. The MWSC was then founded on April 1, 1995 with the aim of planning, managing and developing the public water supply and sewage disposal of the capital Malé. The development and expansion is necessary due to the strong population growth on the capital island, whose population has doubled in the last two decades.

The original capacity was 3500 m 3 per day. Today the water is pumped from a depth of 50–60 meters and is brackish water . While the water is mainly desalinated and treated by reverse osmosis , the untreated wastewater is returned to the Indian Ocean via pumping stations. The wastewater is pumped into the sea outside the reef at an average depth of 13 meters. Originally only planned to supply Malé, the MWSC now also supplies the islands of Hulhumalé and Villingili .

Mohamed Ahmed Didi was appointed Managing Director on September 5, 2007. MWSC is one of the first companies in the Maldives to be ISO 9001 certified .

Corruption and mismanagement

MWSC operates together with Champa Brother Pvt. the bottling company Island Beverages Maldives (IBM), which fills the TaZa mineral water, in a joint venture . MWSC holds 51 percent of the company. In principle, the TaZa is desalinated water with only a few minerals added, which MWSC produces using the normal process for drinking water treatment. The joint venture hit the headlines because IBM uses MWSC's infrastructure and may even get the water for free. The ubiquitous nepotism and corruption in the Maldives becomes clear because today's Maldivian ambassador in London, Hassan Sobir, was a former chairman of MWSC and is now indirectly involved in the bottler IBM via the Champa Brothers.

In a letter published on June 30, 2005 to the then authorized signatory of the MWSC, Mohamed Ahmed Didi, who was also director of the Bank of Maldives and managing director of Island Beverages Maldives, half the workforce complained about the mismanagement and incompetent management, in particular via Mohamed Didi, who has held the post since April 2000. Mohamed Didi is today managing director of MWSC.
