The company State Electric Company Limited , shortly STELCO is next to the Male 'Water & Sewerage Company Pvt. (MWSC) one of the state, Maldivian utility companies. STELCO is responsible for the electricity supply .
history
STELCO was founded in 1949 as the Electricity Department and later renamed the Maldives Electricity Board . The company employs around 700 people across the Maldives and supplies 27 islands with electricity. 56 people alone are employed at the power plant in the capital Malé .
State Electric Company Limited is headed by Hassan Zahir.
Generation and supply network
The company also operates seawater desalination plants in order to be able to produce the process water required for energy generation itself.
STELCO operates the largest power plant in the Maldives ( 4 ° 10 ′ 12.7 ″ N , 73 ° 30 ′ 50.4 ″ E ) in the southeast of Malé with an installed capacity of 35 megawatts . As on the entire island of the island state , the electrical energy is generated by diesel generators. The power plant in Malé uses 115,000 liters of diesel fuel every day .
A power plant ( 4 ° 12 ′ 15 ″ N , 73 ° 32 ′ 17.5 ″ E ) is also operated on the artificially created island of Hulhumalé . The power plant went into operation on December 10, 2004 and currently has an output of around 2.2 MW. As part of the further settlement of Hulhumalé and the further expansion of the industry there, the output is continuously increased.
In addition to larger power plants on Villingili and Thilafushi , which were also created through land reclamation, mainly by backfilling with garbage, electricity is generated on another 23 islands.
