Malleus regula is a shell - type from the family of hammer shells (Malleidae).

features

The large housing is elongated in the dorsoventral direction . Typically it is about four times as long as it is wide. It reaches a maximum length (or height) of 12 cm. The outline is more tongue-shaped to irregular. It's flattened and can also be a little twisted or crooked. The dorsal margin is slightly widened, the back ear is short or absent, as is the front ear. Instead, the posterior margin near the ventral margin is often somewhat widened. There is a byssus slot on the back of both flaps . The byssus is well developed. The front part of the foot is tentacle-shaped.

There is only one sphincter muscle. The lock is without teeth. The ligament lies in a triangular ligament pit.

The skin is black-purple to light brown on the outside. The surface has concentric or roof-tile-like lamellae or ribs parallel to the edge, particularly close to the vertebra. The lamellae are irregular, the periostracum is mostly missing or has been rubbed off.

Geographical distribution and habitat

According to current opinion, the species has a huge range, which includes the tropical and subtropical areas of the Pacific and Indian Oceans from the west coast of North America to the Red Sea . Malleus regula came as a Lessepsian immigrant through the Suez Canal to the eastern Mediterranean .

The animals are firmly anchored to rocky ground with byssus threads. They are stuck vertically in the sediment or in crevices that are completely or partially filled with mud. They often live in dense colonies .

Taxonomy

The description of the taxon by Peter Forsskål was published posthumously by Carsten Niebuhr in 1775 . The original combination was Ostrea regula . Peter Forsskål died of malaria in 1763 on a research trip to Yemen . The additional species Latin regula (= bar, lath, rail, ruler) is a verb in apposition , d. H. the ending is not adapted to the (masculine) gender of Malleus . The type locality is Suez on the Red Sea.

annotation

  1. Coan and Valentich quietly express doubts as to whether it is actually Malleus regula that occurs on the American west coast. Should it be a separate species, the name Malleus rufipunctatus Reeve, 1858 would be available.
