Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals is an Irish pharmaceutical company headquartered in Staines-upon-Thames, England. Mallinckrodt manufactures and sells generics, contrast media and analgesics , among other things . In 2015, the company had 5,500 employees in 47 locations worldwide.

G. Mallinckrodt & Co. was founded in St. Louis in 1867 by the brothers Gustav, Otto and Edward Mallinckrodt. Her father Emil Mallinckrodt came to America as a German immigrant and in 1850 bought the property on which the first production facility would later be located. In the early years, the company primarily supplied local pharmacies with the necessary pharmaceuticals and sold basic chemicals for the production of photographic films . In the following decades, pain relievers and contrast media for use in radiology were added to the product range. During the Second World War Mallinckrodt supplied enriched uranium for the Manhattan Project . The nuclear waste resulting from the processing of the uranium was then disposed of in the St. Louis region with the approval of the US government. To this day, the United States Army Corps of Engineers deals with the decontamination of areas affected by the deposition of low-level radioactive waste. In 1982 the company was taken over by Avon Products and from there in 1986 to the International Minerals and Chemical Corporation . In 2000 it was taken over by Tyco International , whose pharmaceutical and medical technology division split off in 2007 under the name Tyco Healthcare and renamed it Covidien . Mallinckrodt has been an independent company again since 2013.
