Malpasito is the name of a pre-Columbian ruin site in the southwest of the Mexican state of Tabasco near the borders with today's states of Chiapas and Veracruz . The cultural classification of the site is controversial - despite the lack of inscriptions, steles, sculptures, etc. it is sometimes assigned to the Maya or the Zoque Indians, of which no other historical stone buildings are known.

location

The archaeological site of Malpasito is located in the Municipio de Huimanguillo about 500 m southwest of the small town of the same name not far from the N 1450 on the northern edge of a heavily forested ridge (Selva Zoque) about 135 km (driving distance) southwest of the city of Villahermosa or approx. 113 km northwest of Tuxtla Gutiérrez at an altitude of about 300  m .

history

The site, located on a connecting route between the Gulf and Pacific coast , was inhabited in the late Classical period (approx. 700–900); one can assume that about 100 years later hardly any people lived here. In 1522 the Spaniards roamed the area and reported that it was inhabited by the Zoque. Archaeological excavations have only taken place since the 1990s.

Excavation site

To date, more than 50 stone structures have been discovered; including several inner courtyards or plazas with surrounding building foundations and an 'H' -shaped ball playground ; the main square has an area of over 2000 m². Clearly identifiable temples are missing; the same applies to the pyramidal substructures.
