Malvern Wells Iles

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Malvern Wells Iles (born August 7, 1852 in Midway (Kentucky) , † January 9, 1937 in San Francisco ) was an American metallurgist .

Life

He graduated from Columbia University School of Mines in 1875 and became a Fellow at Johns Hopkins University , where he spent two years researching sulfuric acid and xylenes . He then became a chemist and assayer at Utica Mining & Milling Co and later a metallurgist at the Omaha and Grant smelting company founded by James Benton Grant , as well as operations manager and metallurgist at the Holden smelting company in Denver (Colorado). In 1876 he received his Ph. D. from Columbia for his improvements in the smelting of lead and silver. He has published nearly 50 papers in the American Journal of Science and The American Chemical Journal and has been a member of scientific societies in the United States and Europe.

The mineral ilesite is named after him. According to various sources, he is said to have died in 1900. Marcus Benjamin (1857-1932) asserted in 1927, however, that Iles lived in Oakland , California. A grave in the local Mountain View Cemetery gives the year of death 1937.
