Mamaku Plateau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mamaku Plateau is a plateau on the North Island of New Zealand . The plain lies west of Lake Rotorua , north of Lake Taupo and immediately south of the Kaimai Range and can therefore be regarded as its continuation. The Kaimai Range itself can be seen as the foothills of the Coromandel Peninsula . The mountains end in the south with the valley of the Waikato River .

The highest point of the plateau reaches over 600 m. The area is heavily forested. The Kaimai-Mamaku State Forest and the Kinleith Forest cover large parts of the region. The Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park protects 450 km² of the area. This park is expanded with paths and is used for hiking, camping and hunting.

The forests are the southern limit of natural range for kauri trees and the northern limit of range for common beech and silver beech in New Zealand.
