Oinochoe des Mamarce in Würzburg

Mamarce is the name of an Etruscan potter who lived in the second half of the 7th century BC. Was active.

Mamarce is only known from one oinochoe he made , but from an art-historical point of view, its importance should not be underestimated. The impasto - Oinochoe was on a potter's wheel turned. It shows a modification of the oriental motif of the Lord of the Animals and shows influences from Syria or Cyprus as well as traditional elements of the Villanova culture . It also combines new and old elements in production.

An inscription in Etruscan script and language running from right to left names the manufacturer of the vase: mi mamarce zinace , I made Mamarce . Mi is the first person personal pronoun in the singular, mamarce is a masculine given name in the nominative and zinace is an active-perfect verb with the stem zina- which means to make in a material sense. Since Mamarce is only called by his first name, it can be assumed that he comes from a lower social class. The exact origin of the potter is not entirely certain, it probably comes from the Falisker settlement area around Falerii , possibly also from the neighboring Veji . The oinochoe is exhibited today in the antique collection of the Martin von Wagner Museum in Würzburg (Inv. No. H 5724).
