Mammillaria albilanata is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet means 'white woolly'.
description
Mammillaria albilanata , the white woolly Mammillaria has a coarse, cylindrical gray-green body, some more than 15 centimeters high and 8 centimeters in diameter. The warts are gray-green and arranged in a spiral. They are firm and have no milky juice . The white-haired axillae are covered with coarse wool. About 15 to 26 stiff white radial spines with a length of 2 to 4 millimeters and a slightly dark tip are crowned by 2 to 4 stiff central spines . The central spines are straight white to cream-colored with a brownish tip and are only 2 to 3 millimeters long.
The flowers are only 7 millimeters long and deep carmine pink, purple-pink to pink in color. The fruits are pink to red. They have light brown seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria albilanata is common in the Mexican states of Guerrero , Oaxaca , Puebla , Chiapas, and Colima .
It was first described in 1939 by Curt Backeberg .

Mammillaria albilanata subsp. albilanata :
Synonyms are Mammillaria fuauxiana Backeb. (1950), Mammillaria albilanata var. Fuauxiana (Backeb.) E. Kuhn (1984) (nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3), Mammillaria albilanata var. Gracilis B. Hofmann (1985) (nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 36.1 and 37.1), Mammillaria ingualensis Repp. (1987) and Mammillaria ingualensis var. Palmillensis Repp. (1987). The flowers are deep carmine red. The nominate form occurs only in the Mexican states of Guerrero, Puebla, Colima and Chiapas at altitudes between 500 and 2000 meters. -
Mammillaria albilanata subsp. oaxacana D.R. Hunt :
The first description was in 1997 by David Richard Hunt . Synonyms are Mammillaria ignota Repp. (1987) Mammillaria lanigera Repp. (1987) Mammillaria lanigera var. Juxtlahuacensis Repp. (1987) Mammillaria monticola Repp. (1987) and Mammillaria noureddineana Repp. (1987). The subspecies has carmine to pink flowers. It occurs only in the Mexican state of Oaxaca at altitudes between 700 and 2400 meters. -
Mammillaria albilanata subsp. reppenhagenii (DR Hunt) DR Hunt :
The first description was in 1977 as Mammillaria reppenhagenii by David Richard Hunt. 1997 DR Hunt presented the species as a subspecies to Mammillaria albilanata . A synonym is Mammillaria reppenhagenii D.R. Hunt (1977). The subspecies has carmine-red flowers, the perianth segments are provided with light edges. It occurs only in the Mexican state of Colima at altitudes between 900 and 1300 meters. -
Mammillaria albilanata subsp. tegelbergiana (HE Gates ex GE Lindsay) DR Hunt :
The first description was in 1966 as Mammillaria tegelbergiana by George Edmund Lindsay (1916-2002). David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria albilanata . Synonyms are Mammillaria tegelbergiana H.E. Gates ex GELindsey (1966) and Mammillaria albilanata var. Tegelbergiana (HEGates ex GELindsey) E. Kuhn (1984) (nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3). The subspecies has purple-pink flowers. It occurs only in the Mexican state of Chiapas at altitudes between 700 and 2200 meters.
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The subspecies were not recorded individually.
