Mammillaria backebergiana is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German plant collector and cactus researcher Curt Backeberg .

description

Mammillaria backebergiana usually grows individually with a cylindrical body that is up to 30 centimeters high and 5 to 6 centimeters in diameter. The pyramidal, not angular, short warts have no milky sap . The axillae are bare or have few bristles. The 1 to 3  central spines are straight, needle-like, yellowish brown to brown and are only 0.7 to 0.8 centimeters long. The 10 to 12 radial spines are yellowish white with a brown tip; they get darker with age. They are 0.8 to 1 centimeter long.

The purple flowers are 1.8 to 2 inches long and 1 to 1.3 inches in diameter. The fruits are cloudy green towards the tip and whitish underneath and contain brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria backebergiana is common in the Mexican states of Mexico , Guerrero and Michoacán .

It was first described in 1966 by Francisco Guillermo Buchenau .

Synonyms are the following described species and varieties:
Mammillaria ernestii Fittkau (1971), Mammillaria backebergiana var. Ernestii (Fittkau) Glas & Foster (1979) and Mammillaria isotensis Repp. (1987).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria backebergiana subsp. backebergiana :
    The nominate form is the most common. It has a medium green body with only 2 to 3 central spines.
  • Mammillaria backebergiana subsp. ernestii (Fittkau) DRHunt :
    The first description was in 1971 by Hans Werner Fittkau (1913–2002) as Mammillaria ernestii . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria backebergiana . The subspecies is only found in the state of Mexico near Tonatico. It has a dark green body with only one central spine.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
