Mammillaria herrerae is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet herrerae honors the Mexican biologist and naturalist Alfonso L. Herrera (1870–1942), who founded the zoological garden of Chapultepec in1923.

description

Mammillaria herrerae grows individually or sprouts at the base. The spherical shoots reach a diameter of 2 to 3.5 centimeters. The cylindrical warts , trimmed at the tip, are close together. They do not contain milk juice . The axillae are bare. Central spines are absent. The 100 or more bristle-like, white or gray radial spines are unequal, radiating horizontally and interwoven. They are 1 to 5 millimeters long.

The pink flowers reach a length of 2 to 2.5 centimeters. The small, almost spherical fruits are whitish and contain blackish brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria herrerae is common in the Mexican state of Querétaro .

It was first described in 1931 by Erich Werdermann . Synonyms are Chilita herrerae (Werderm.) Buxb. (1954, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3), Escobariopsis herrerae (Werderm.) Doweld (2000) and Mammillaria herrerai Fric (1924, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 32.1c).

Mammillaria herrerae is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. critically endangered, classified.
