Mammillaria morganiana is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet morganiana honors the American optometrist and succulent lover Meredith Walter Morgan (1887–1957) from Richmond .
description
Mammillaria morganiana first grows individually, later branching out dichotomously and forming groups. The spherical to short cylindrical shoots are bright blue-green with a narrowed apex. They grow up to 8 centimeters in diameter. The pyramidal warts have milky sap . The axillae are covered with fine hairs up to 2 centimeters long. The 4 to 5 central spines are straight, needle-like, white with a brown tip and 1 centimeter long. The 40 to 50 radial spines are white, very fine, needle-like to hairy, twisted and interlocking and up to 1.2 inches long.
The cream-colored to pink flowers have a deep pink central stripe. They are 1.5 inches long and have the same diameter. The red fruits contain brown seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria morganiana is common in the Mexican state of Guanajuato . It was first described in 1933 by Ernst Tiegel (1879–1936).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
