Mammillaria napina is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet napina ( Latin ) means 'beet-like'.

Mammillaria napina grows individually, rarely forming groups. The plant bodies stay low and have a bulbous taproot . The hemispherical to spherical shoots are 5 centimeters high and also measure 5 centimeters in diameter. The conically shaped warts do not contain milky juice . The axillae are somewhat woolly or bare. Central spines are usually completely absent and have only rarely been observed. The 10 to 12 slightly curved radial spines are glassy white with a yellowish base and 8 to 10 millimeters long.

The bell-shaped flowers are light carmine red or pink with a sometimes conspicuous whitish throat. They are up to 4 centimeters long with an equal diameter. The colorless fruits are embedded in the plant body. They contain black seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria napina is common in the Mexican state of Puebla . It was first described in 1912 by Joseph Anton Purpus . Synonyms are Neomammillaria napina (JAPurpus) Britton & Rose (1923) and Bartschella napina (JAPurpus) Doweld (2000).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Near Threatened (NT) ", that is, as low endangered.
