Mammillaria sphacelata is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet sphacelata means '(Latin sphacelatus) burned, burned-colored, -brown'.

Mammillaria sphacelata often grows forming groups that often make up pads of 50 centimeters in diameter and more. The bright green shoots are cylindrical in shape and measure 2 to 3 centimeters in diameter. The conically shaped warts do not contain milky juice . The axillae are slightly woolly or bare. The thorns are usually ivory to chalky white with reddish mottled tips. Up to 4  central spines are straight and 4 to 8 millimeters long. The 10 to 15 radial spines are 5 to 8 millimeters long.

The flowers don't open very wide. They are carmine red to dark purple. The slightly curved and club-shaped fruits are scarlet red. They contain black seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria sphacelata is common in the Mexican states of Puebla and Oaxaca .

It was first described in 1832 by Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria sphacelata subsp. sphacelata :
    Synonyms are Neomammillaria sphacelata (Mart.) Britton & Rose (1923), Chilita sphacelata (Mart.) Orcutt (1926), Ebnerella sphacelata (Mart.) Buxb. (1951), Leptocladodia sphacelata (Mart.) Buxb. (1962) and Escobariopsis sphacelata (Mart.) Doweld (2000). The nominate form has shoots with a diameter of 3 centimeters.
  • Mammillaria sphacelata subsp. viperina (JAPurpus) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1912 as Mammillaria viperina by Josef Anton Purpus . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria sphacelata . Synonyms are Neomammillaria viperina (JAPurpus) Bravo (1931), Leptocladodia viperina (JAPurpus) Buxb. (1962), Mammillaria sphacelata var. Viperina (JAPurpus) E. Kuhn (1982, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3), Mammillaria sphacelata f. viperina (JAPurpus) Battaia & Zanovello (1996) and Escobariopsis viperina (JAPurpus) Doweld (2000). The subspecies has slimmer shoots up to 2 centimeters in diameter.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Least Concern (LV) ", i. H. listed as not endangered.
